Idris Elba was born on 6th September 1972 in Hackney, London, to parents from Sierra Leone and Ghana. He was raised in Canning Town, East London (where he was a neighbour of the pop star Rihanna) and attended school in nearby Canning Town.
Idris attended City and Islington College before studying at the National Youth Music Theater up until the age of 18. As a youngster, Elba was drawn to rap music, and created the stage name Driis, which was an acronym of his original name, Idrissa Akuna Elba, but later changed it to avoid any confusion with Irish actor Idris Elba.

Upon becoming a member of the National Youth Music Theater, Elba landed a role on the television series Shooting Stars. He appeared on the soap opera Family Affairs for two years. He is well-known for Guardians of the Galaxy, Beast, The Jungle Book 2 etc.
Elba won a Laurence Olivier Award for his role in Coram Boy, as well as being nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 2006 for his role in the comedy film Rocky Balboa. He has won a Grammy and been nominated for a BAFTA and an Emmy.
Idris Elba also produced a documentary called Fighter where he has displayed his kickboxing as well as mixed martial arts skills. He was trained under Muay Thai.
