Louis Farrakhan was born Louis Eugene Walcott on May 11, 1933, in New York City. Percival, his biological father, abandoned the family before he was born; thus, he was raised by his mother, Sarah.

While Sarah and Percival were breaking up, she began living with Louis Walcott, who became a stepfather to Louis and his older brother. When Walcott passed away in 1936, his family uprooted and headed for Boston.

At age five, Louis picked up a violin, and by age 12, he was touring with the Boston College Orchestra. Not only did he appear on the “Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour,” but he also won national competitions.

Louis attended Boston Latin and English High School before attending Winston-Salem Teachers College on a track scholarship. He decided to leave college following his junior year to devote more time to his wife and newborn child.

In the 1950s, Louis began touring the United States as a performer. He recorded many calypso records and went by the names “The Charmer” and “Calypso Gene.” As a result of his friendship with Rodney Smith, he was introduced to the Nation of Islam in 1955 and invited to attend Elijah Muhammad’s Saviours’ Day talk.

Until he was given the Islamic name Farrakhan, Louis X joined the NOI in July of that year, going by the name Louis X until he was formally inducted into the NOI. The following summer, Louis gave up his longtime interest after Muhammad demanded all of the group’s musicians choose between NOI and music.

Farrakhan has been labeled an anti-Semite by the Southern Poverty Law Center, and his divisive political views and fiery rhetoric have garnered him both praise and criticism.

Both the first million Man March in 1995 and the 20th Anniversary March for Justice or Else in 2015 were spearheaded by Louis. Farrakhan is still involved with the NOI today, though his role is much smaller than it once was because of health problems.
